eSnips Case Study published in SearchEngineWatch.com

We are a small team but because we have a passion for numbers, we have a person on board totally dedicated to metrics:  Meet Daniel Waisberg, our Web Analyst. Daniel wrote a case study that was featured in SearchEngineWatch,  a very prestigous site the covers all aspects of search. The case study was on how an improved search on the site (in this case eSnips) can result in a significant improvement in user retention.  It made it to the home page. Check it out, it's interesting.

eSnips Radio: coming up soon

There's so much amazing original music on eSnips that creating an eSnips music that would stream it in channels was too natural. eSnips Radio, in it's initial verion will be live soon. It's a multi-channel radio that streams non stop original music uploaded to eSnips by musicians from around the world. The channels now based on music genres. In the future, we plan on enabling you to create your own channels:  This is how the eSnips Radio looks:

Web 2.0 Eco-system

As we’re getting close to our next fundraising we thought it would be useful to get a clearer picture of how esnips was doing in comparison to other companies. Since traction is the initial and most central criteria in evaluating the potential of a Web 2.0 company, we started by organizing the top 100 web 2.0 companies by their reach.  This is the eco-system that came out.

Web20_alexa_value_chart_3

Don’t take it too seriously of course, it’s a generalization, an interesting way of looking at things.  Problems to point out for example are that Alexa numbers are known to be skewed towards Bay Area traffic so some of the ventures reach is much higher than it should be, but those are the exceptions since the bigger the numbers get the less it becomes relevant.

Also, reach /  traction are far from being the only criteria defining the value of a company. And yet, it’s interesting to see that current investment, and the majority of acquisition, and rumored acquisition offers show a strong correlation between reach and market value as this eco-system suggests.

As far as eSnips is concerned, we were surprised and delighted to see that we are part of only  a handful of companies that are showing signs for potential breakout. BTW, eSnips is now at 1200 in Alexa Reach . And, in case you were wondering....the answer is NO! we don’t rely on Alexa for our metrics. We follow our internal metrics :)

eSnips doing well in the web 2.0 eco-system

Movers2.0 now has widgets:  coold to see how nicely esnips is doing.  eSnips is #33 most visited site among web 2.0 companies based on alexa data. In case you were wondering, there are about 2500 web 2.0 companies. According to Guidewire Group about 6 web 2.0 companies were formed during 2006.  Must make a disclaimer here:  Movers 2.0 was created by Eran Arkin, a developer at eSnips, based on data from Alexa.

New Look: Home Page and site re-design

Along with the new version we also redesigned the site. there are many design and structural changes that don't jump out, but you must have noticed the new home page, which now also surfaces some of the latest and greatest from the different communities.

Another small change, that I like, is the additon of country flags. Since eSnippers are really spread all over the world, the flags make eSnips this funny combination of a national and  global self expression.

And very positive press and blog reviews

Independent musicians may find eSnips particularly appealing because it allows them create customized music-playing widgets that can be embedded in any Web site to promote and sell their songs.

eSnips is divided into specific vertical communities, including Karaoke, DJs, Photography, Painting, Video, Spiritual, Poetry, Humor, Paranormal, and Marketplace, to name a few.

"This is a way of addressing the 'Long Tail' in terms of providing users with their own portals," says Elish.

We covered eSnips last year and noted its similarity to social bookmarking site Del.icio.us mixed with content hosting like you'd find on social networking sites. Since then, eSnips claims to have grown to a user base of more than 1.5 million registered users, which is more than Del.icio.us in less than a third of the time. The company also added 'Micro-Portals' in November, which are themed community pages that aggregate some of the site's most popular content. Photography, for example, gets its own Micro-Portal featuring popular or interesting photos from eSnips users. The same goes for poetry, painting, and now music.

I liked Josh's observation on the eSnips toolbar, which is really one of the most useful features of the service and that I never get to write about:

I usually don't get excited about toolbars, but this one has a neat feature that lets you take really slick looking screenshots of whatever Web page you're looking at, to share with others. Other social bookmarking tools rely on users or the site's feed to fill in aspects like the title and the description; but with the toolbar, you can just take a shot of it and post it to your eSnips profile, without having to log in or even touch your keyboard.

eSnips is like Photobucket meets YouTube meets Webshots and everything else in between. The model works, with users hosting and syndicating their media all over the web. At least for now, eSnips seems to be less reliant on copyrighted media than its competitors (YouTube, Imeem etc), and perhaps less dependent on the social networks for traffic.

New music focused version went live today!

'A couple of month of very intensive work and a great new version went live today. The version was inspired by, and is dedicated to the fast growing community of diverse genre musicians that has made it's home on eSnips.

The goal of the new version was to provide a home, or a 'one stop shop' place where musicians can not only share all their music but also promote it virally online and socialize with their peers.

Key features added:

  • More space to fit all your songs (increase storage from 1GB to 5GB)
  • Playlists and single-songs widgets to promote your music online, on other sites and blogs
  • eMail sending of songs and other media, with gener skins and backgrounds
  • Eight new genre specific music communities: Electronic, Metal, Industrial & Gothic , Rap, Reggae, Jazz, Hindi , Elvis , and Blues.

Creating a playlists from other eSnippers 'favorite' files

If you haven’t noticed the ‘play music’ button right next to favorite files in people’s profiles, you should. It’s a great way to listen to a collection of music a particular taste. I started getting into into profiles of users I 'favoritted' in the past and play their music collections. We’ll soon allow saving of playlists, in the interim you can create a playlist widget and put it on your site, blog or make it an eSnips post.

Here’s one I created from the favorite files of an eSnipper that I discovered added to my favorites a long while a go: FredEric White, from Montreal , Canada, Artist and singer. Most of the (if not all) is songs by great Karaokers on eSnips.
